All How to Fish Bosses at a Glance
The islands in How to Fish don’t have official names, so one detailed Steam community guide (written for version 1.0.6) refers to them by their Radar dot colors instead: White, Green, Yellow, Red, and Purple. That guide’s quick-reference table recommends Brass Knuckles or the Knife for the Spider Crab, a Pistol plus explosives for the Giant Piranha, an SMG plus explosives for the Pufferfish, the SMG again for both the Tuna and the Albatross, and the Assault Rifle for the Bowhead Whale and the Mutated Bowhead Whale.
You must unlock islands in quest order — coordinates for the next one only appear after you hand in the current boss’s trophy, so locked islands can’t be visited early.
Spider Crab (Island 1)
Give a Beer to the Lighthouse Keeper and he hands back an Empty Can; attach that can as bait on the Crab Fishing Rod to summon the Spider Crab. Brass Knuckles and the Knife are the only melee options on this first island — Brass Knuckles hit fast for low damage, the Knife hits slower for more per swing, and either works fine.
The fight’s whole rhythm is built around its charge: dodge sideways when it charges, and it becomes stunned for a few seconds after missing. Move in during that stun window and land your hits, then back off before its next charge. Hand the Spider Crab Shell to the Lighthouse Keeper afterward for the Boat Key, then buy a Radar to find the next island.
Giant Piranha (Island 2)
Collect three Leeches from the ground on the second island and give them to the woman near the lake; she turns them into the bait needed to summon the Giant Piranha. The Pistol is the better pick here over the Shotgun, since the Shotgun’s two-shot reload can’t keep up with the wave of small piranhas the boss keeps spawning.
Use the small piranhas as a resource loop: kill them with the pistol, eat the dead ones to heal when low, and feed them to the shopkeeper for cash when you’re healthy, then spend that money on Explosives. Wait until the boss and its small piranhas cluster together before throwing an explosive, since it damages the boss and clears the adds at once — and back away right after lighting it, since explosives can hurt you too. Return the Giant Piranha Skeleton afterward for the next island’s coordinates.
Pufferfish (Island 3)
Feed the Tourist an endangered creature — a Seahorse, Needlefish, or Bowlfish — to receive a Carrot, then cast the Carrot to summon the Pufferfish. This island unlocks the SMG, and the Pufferfish actually grows larger as its health drops, so throwing explosives at it early inflates it into an easier target with a bigger hitbox.
Circle around the island’s coconut trees so the trunks block the Pufferfish’s charges while you spray it with the SMG, but don’t get too close or you’ll snag on the trees yourself. Once it drops below half health it starts leaving a trail of purple poison gas, so widen your circle and avoid looping directly behind its recent path. Return the Pufferfish Fin to the Tourist for the next island’s coordinates.
Tuna & Albatross (Island 4)
Before the Albatross, you need to deal with the Tuna: catch one with the Professional Boss Bait, defeat it without selling, cooking, or eating it, then place its body on dry ground to lure the Albatross in. The SMG is the better weapon for this fight — testing shows the game has no damage falloff at range, so the “flying bosses need a sniper” instinct doesn’t hold up here.
The Albatross alternates dive attacks and ranged attacks that are both telegraphed by an audio cue, so retreat into a nearby building — the shop or the casino entrance at the mountain top both work — the moment you hear or see an attack coming, then step back out to fire once it’s safe. The shop entrance also lets you buy Beer to heal mid-fight, though beer reduces fullness, so bring food along too. Collect the Albatross Head and turn it in for the coordinates to the final island.
Bowhead Whale & Mutated Bowhead Whale (Island 5)
On the final island, feed five fish to the scientist for a Fish Bucket, then use it to summon the regular Bowhead Whale — a required pre-boss for the true final fight. The Assault Rifle unlocks here and is the strongest all-around weapon for the rest of the game; keep moving through the open area near the shop and watch its jump direction so you can turn and hip-fire as it lands.
After beating the Bowhead Whale, restock ammo and supplies, then carry its body up to the crater and drop it in to spawn the Mutated Bowhead Whale. It charges, jumps, and scatters lava patches that shrink your safe space over time, so keep watching your footing rather than running randomly. Early on it slams once before you should turn and fire; once it drops below half health it slams twice in a row first, and its attack frequency also increases, so stay patient and don’t get greedy for extra shots. The trophy is the Whale Tail — hand it to the scientist for the boat key, and starting the boat is what actually triggers the ending, so don’t assume the game is over right after the kill.
General Boss Prep Tips
A few habits help across every boss fight. Buy the Suppressor over the Muzzle Brake for full-auto weapons like the SMG and Assault Rifle, since it cuts recoil by more, and prioritize the Extended Mag early too. Cooked animals sell for more and heal you better mid-fight than raw ones, and Purple Island’s lava can cook a catch to 1.5x value on the spot without any risk of burning it.
There’s no fixed number of weapon upgrades you need — everyone’s aim and movement differ, so keep upgrading if your damage output feels behind rather than grinding to copy someone else’s exact build.
Co-op Boss Tactics
Co-op has one tactic that works against nearly every boss in the game: whoever the boss is currently chasing simply runs and kites, while every other player stands in a safe position and fires continuously. If the boss switches its target mid-fight, swap roles immediately rather than trying to out-tank it. Most bosses in How to Fish can’t handle one player kiting while the rest of the group focuses damage uninterrupted.
For the Mutated Bowhead Whale specifically, one player can stand near the crater edge and fire an Assault Rifle nonstop while a teammate keeps the boss’s attention and its line of sight on them instead. With that positioning, the whale can barely land a hit on whoever is standing at the crater edge doing the damage.
